Longtail

"Look at his collar! He's a kittypet! Once a kittypet, always a kittypet. This Clan needs wild-born warriors to defend it, not another soft mouth to feed."

Longtail is a thin-furred,[1] pale[2] silver[3]-gray[4] tabby tom with black stripes,[2] a "V"-shaped nick in his ear,[5] and a long tail.[6]

Kit

Nothing is known about Longtail as a kit, as it was not mentioned in the books, except that his parents were Patchpelt and Robinwing.

Apprentice

Nothing is known about Longtail as an apprentice, as it was not mentioned in the books, except that his mentor was Darkstripe.

Warrior

When Rusty first came to the clan, Longtail taunted him and they got into a fight. Longtail tugged at Rusty's collar and removed it. In the battle, Rusty got a scar above his eye, and Longtail's ear was nicked.

But when Tigerclaw was forced to leave, Longtail refused to join him. Longtail came to respect Firestar, and they became friends. Longtail was also Swiftpaw's mentor before the pack of dogs killed him.

Elder

Longtail retired early because he was blinded by a rabbit, but his sense of smell and hearing got stronger. He was the only elder in ThunderClan who joined the clans to the journey to the lake.

While trying to retrieve Mousefur's fresh-kill, a tree crashes on top of him and Briarpaw. He dies from the crash.

StarClan Resident

Longtail is seen sitting next to Whitestorm, when Jayfeather comes to StarClan to find Flametail. He greets the medicine cat, describing Longtail's eyes bright and clear. As Jayfeather explains what's happening to StarClan, he asks how Mousefur is doing. Jayfeather simply answers she's grumpy. Later, he comes to assist Mousefur in the battle against the Dark Forest warriors. When a Dark Forest warrior kills Mousefur, he flies into a rage and kills the tom before returning to the battle.

Trivia

  • Kate has described Longtail's tail as not freakishly long, just elegantly.[7]
  • There has been much conflict over Longtail's description, mainly his pelt color. Although called silver in Rising Storm,[3] he is called brown less than fifty pages later.[8] When asked about this, Kate, the author of Rising Storm, says that she sees tabbies as brown, and suspects that Cherith sees her tabbies as silver. To solve the problem surrounding Longtail's pelt color, Kate says that Longtail is brown.[9] Vicky, the former head editor for Warriors, however, states that she thinks of Longtail as a gray tabby.[10] Kate, however, later stated that she was outvoted and that Longtail is indeed a silver-gray tabby.[4]
  • Vicky says that Longtail did not develop any romantic feelings for Mousefur, and that they were just good friends.[11]
  • He was named for his tail, and knew from the beginning his warrior name would be Longtail.[12]
